After the first month she ordered two more. One for her mom's apartment. One for her sister's place.

Her name is Denise.

I met her at the folding table after the Sunday service where the ladies put out coffee and those little pink wafer cookies nobody actually likes but everybody eats.

She was showing another woman her phone.

Not in a proud way.

In the way you show somebody a photo of a grandbaby, quiet, like it still surprises her that the thing is real.

The number on her screen was $300 and change from Tuesday.

She said the first week she ran it she made $700 and she almost called her son to ask if it was a scam.

Her mom is 78.

Lives in a one bedroom off Route 9 with a wall heater that clicks when it comes on and a fridge with three magnets on it from grandkids who have not visited in a while.

Her sister is 44 with three kids in a rental behind the Family Dollar.

Denise said the day her first month cleared she drove straight to the phone store and bought two more of the little devices.

Set one up on her mom's kitchen counter next to the pill organizer.

Drove the other one out to her sister's the following Saturday and set it up before the kids were even up for cartoons.

She said by month three the three of them together had pulled in around $8,900.

She said it real quiet like she was telling me a secret.

She said the first Thanksgiving after that was the first Thanksgiving in about nine years where nobody at the table fought about money.

Her mom did not have to apologize for asking for help with the propane.

Her sister did not have to leave the table when the check came for the pies.

She said her mom cried a little into the mashed potatoes and nobody said anything about it because everybody at the table already knew.

I stood there holding my little paper plate of pink wafer cookies and I could feel the parking lot in April sitting right behind my ribs where it always sits.

Because I was that sister once.

I was the one behind the Family Dollar with the kids and the rental and the mailbox full of second notices.

So I did what Denise did.

I asked her right there at the coffee table to show me how.

She pulled it up on her phone.

A short setup video.

About twenty minutes on a Sunday, she said.

Runs off the house wifi.

The little device sits on the counter next to the toaster and does its thing.

I set mine up the next morning before I put the coffee on.

I barely touched it the first week because I kept forgetting it was there.

Life got in the way like it always does.

Then a Friday came and there was a number on the screen and I sat down at the kitchen table and I stared at it for a long time.

The second month I did what she did.

I drove one out to my mom.

The month after that I bought a third for my daughter who works nights at the nursing home and never asks anybody for anything.

Three little devices on three kitchen counters in three different towns.

One family that stopped fighting about money at Thanksgiving.

My mom does not apologize when she asks for a ride to the doctor anymore.

My daughter picked up the check for pizza the last time we were all together and she did it without making a face first.

That is the part nobody warned me about.

The quiet after the money shows up.

The way the house feels different when your people are not scared.

If you are the sister behind the Family Dollar right now, or the daughter watching your mom count out change for the propane, tap the button under this post and watch the setup video.

The same one Denise showed me at the coffee table.

If you have a phone and wifi, you can do it too.

Pass it on to your people when it works.
