CONCEPT: The first Friday morning ping on the lockscreen
HEADLINE: Watch the setup video
WORDS: 621

Her phone pinged at 6:14 in the morning on a Friday and she stared at the notification on the lockscreen for a full ten minutes.

She did not open it.

She just sat on the edge of the mattress in her nightgown and looked at the number until the screen went dark and she had to tap it to wake it up again.

She told me later she took a picture of the lockscreen with her other phone because she was sure it was going to disappear the second she touched it.

Like the way a hummingbird leaves the feeder the second you open the sliding door.

Her name is Bonnie and I met her at church about a year ago.

She is the one who brings the deviled eggs on the plastic tray with the lid that never quite closes.

Bonnie's husband passed in 2022 and she was carrying an overdue power bill and a chipped tooth she kept swallowing aspirin over because she could not afford the dentist and the propane the same month.

I watched her one Sunday in the parking lot of the Piggly Wiggly holding the door of her Buick open with her hip and crying into a plastic bag of frozen peas she had just put back on the shelf because the total was too high.

An older gentleman parked next to her got out, walked over, and did not say a word.

He just handed her a business card and said his daughter runs this little phone thing and it saved her house last winter and please just watch the video honey it takes twenty minutes on a Sunday.

Bonnie set it up on a Sunday.

She barely paid attention to it the first two weeks because life got in the way and the tooth was throbbing and her granddaughter had a recital.

Then that 6:14 Friday morning ping.

$146.

She thought it was a mistake.

It was not.

The next Friday it was $604.

The one after that $1,100 and change.

Last Friday it landed at $1,502.

Same sender line every week.

Same time of morning.

Bonnie makes her coffee before she even reaches for the phone now because she already knows what the little preview is going to say.

I am telling you about Bonnie because two Sundays ago she slid her phone across the diner table toward me with the lockscreen photo pulled up and she said honey it is your turn.

I had been sitting there with my third cup of coffee doing the math on what was owed and what was not going to get paid and pretending I was fine.

She saw right through it the way women our age see right through each other.

I set the little device up on a Tuesday morning before the sun came up.

It runs off the house wifi and it took about twenty minutes and I made a second pot of coffee while I waited.

My first Friday landed at the same exact number as Bonnie's very first one.

I sat down on the kitchen floor and laughed until I cried because I do not believe in coincidences anymore, only small kindnesses from strangers in parking lots.

Since then the Fridays have gotten bigger the way they got bigger for her.

If you are the person reading this at your kitchen table right now with a stack of envelopes you have not opened, tap the button or image under this post and watch the setup video.

Same one the gentleman handed to Bonnie in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot.

If you have a phone and wifi in the house you can do it too.

Pass it forward when it works.
